Rework your Wardrobe with So Zo…

26 Mar

If like us, you have clothes in your wardrobe that don’t quite fit properly, whether it’s trousers that are too long or a dress with unflattering sleeves, you can do something about it! You don’t need to look longingly at them hanging there in the hope one day you’ll wear them. Instead, fish them out and bring them along to the Rework your Wardrobe workshop at the HQ.

Run by resident sewer Zoe Edwards from So Zo…you can bring your unloved, unworn, broken or ill-fitting clothes to this session and learn skills and techniques that will bring them back into wardrobe rotation!

We’ve hosted a few of these classes now and it’s so lovely to come for a couple of hours on a Sunday morning or a couple of hours of an evening and sit and transform an item you love, into an item you love even more! Don’t worry if you are a bit rusty with a sewing machine, Zoe is a fab teacher and you’ll be whizzing away before you know it.

Check out a few before and after snaps from the last workshop:

Ace aren’t they!

Reworking your existing clothes, rather than chucking them away and buying new things, will save you money and has a much smaller environmental impact. Plus, this session will teach you new sewing skills and approaches that you can use again and again in the future. The Rework Your Wardrobe session is simple: you just need to bring a back full of garments to fix, fit or rework, we provide all the equipment you will need.

However, if your garment had a broken zip, you will need to bring a replacement that Zoe can help you insert. The session will start by taking a look at what everyone has brought and having a brief chat about each garment to establish what needs to be done to bring them back to life. Zoe will then assist you to fix/fit/rework as many garments as possible within the session.

The skills, techniques and approaches you will learn will obviously depend on what your garments require, but they may include:

  • Hemming trousers and skirts
  • Fixing rips, tears and holes
  • Reshaping for a more flattering fit
  • Inserting a new zip
  • Shortening hems or sleeves for a new look
  • Plus many others!
All skill levels are welcome. Previous sewing machine experience is helpful but not essential.
The next class is Tuesday 16th April 6.30-9.30

Introduction to commercial sewing patterns

6 Nov

Sunday 18th November 10.30am til 1pm – Introduction to commercial sewing patterns – £24.50

Due to popular demand the super talented Zoe Edwards is putting on another ‘introduction to commercial sewing patterns’ workshop.  This theory based session aims to take the beginner sewer towards being a confident dressmaker by explaining and demystifying the sometimes daunting world of commercial sewing patterns.

By the end of the session you will understand their cryptic language and know how to use them. This is not a practical sewing or pattern cutting class, this is a pure, in-depth exploration into everything you need to know to begin working with sewing patterns at home or at a sewing class.

Topics covered…

  • Finding your size
  • What to do if your measurements span two or more dress sizes
  • Making simple changes if you are taller/shorter or have a long torso/short torso
  • Understanding the sizing differences between vintage and modern sewing patterns
  • Selecting appropriate fabric for your pattern
  • Positioning the pattern pieces onto the fabric
  • What all the symbols mean and what to do about them
  • Transferring the markings onto the fabric

You will be given a printed handout to take home with a lot of the information that will be covered as a reminder, plus lots of links to helpful websites. Please bring a notebook and pen to take further notes if you feel it necessary.

Refreshments will be provided.

If you have any questions about this class, please email Zoe at sozoblog@gmail.com or book your spot here: http://introtosewingpatterns2.eventbrite.co.uk/

Sewing Workshops for Babies and Kids

7 Aug

This month we are introducing our very first sewing workshop for babies and kids things by the super talented Domino DIY.

After 5 years in Berlin, Domino – DIY aka Anna Rank has moved back to Brighton to run sewing workshops for all things baby and kid related. With exclusively designed patterns ranging from dungarees to leggings, hobby horses to musical stars, changing mats to purses, you are sure to find something to suit your level and taste. The courses are open to anyone whether you have never sat at a sewing machine before, or have been stitching all your life and Anna can advise on suitable projects to begin with.

Courses last for 4 weeks, running on Tuesday mornings from 10 – 1. And the great thing is that you can bring your baby with you. As long as they are not yet on the move (too many attractive pins around) then you can sew with them in a sling or have them lying in the comfy baby zone which is full of soft toys and blankets.

These courses are an opportunity for you to learn something new or perhaps brush up on old skills, but most importantly to do something creative for a few hours each week and make some friends whilst you are at it.

Beginning on the 21st August each course runs from 10 – 1 on four consecutive Tuesday mornings, that’s 12 hours in total. But don’t worry if you have to miss a week you can make up the time on the following course.

The course costs £80 per person. Included in the price are any of the Domino-DIY patterns you wish to make (clothes come in a range of sizes so you can keep on making), tea and coffee, and as much help and support as you need. If you sign up with a friend then you both pay £70 each.

For more information, to have a look at what you can make or to book a place on a course then visit here or email anna@domino-diy.com.
