#DOTD Blog Party Round Up. We hope that you have enjoyed our week long #DOTDblogParty as much as we have and perhaps even got around to making something from the projects list!? We were overwhelmed by the amazing response and kind comment we have received about this collaborative project! We are still dead chuffed that these wonderful creative ladies were so kind to give us their time and energy to help make our first ever blogathon such a wonderful experience. We could all do with a little bit more collaboration in our lives and a little less competition! With this in mind we will be slowing our projects down a little over the next few weeks to work on a new series of slow craft project ideas… we will share more on this next week!

We hope to do something similar to our blogathon in the future but for now we would like to give one lucky reader the chance to win a set of all 4 of the Super+Super craft books as a final celebration! All you have to do to enter is tell us what’s the best collaborative project you have been involved in – be it craft, cookery, music, film etc – and why. Please comment below and leave your email address. A winner will be picked next week and books will be posted to you pronto! A runner up will receive one book from the series plus the S+S Calavera Skull decoration from our #DOTDblogParty DIY.

We are coming to the end of our #DOTDblogParty but still have an amazing project to share from Planes Workshop! Based in Brighton this creative business is straight from the imagination of the uber talented Sandeep Pawar. Her stylistic vision is totally gorgeous and how she juggles her day job, kids and still has time to create her totally dreamy paper and textiles creations is beyond us! We know you will enjoy this child friendly garland DIY which comes with its own *free* printable design sheet.
 ~
This fun and simple Day Of The Dead paper decoration pays homage to this vibrant Mexican holiday and is a great way to festoon your walls in celebration.
Candy Skull Paper Garland. Whether you are juggling being a parent with work or a doctor who works 13 hour days and is also studying for exams, feeling stressed about our daily lives is something that affects us all. Busy schedules can make planning for special occasions a mammoth task, but this DIY is here to help! That you can colour in this project alone makes for a perfect activity to do with little people. However, if you need a quick win, but still want to look like you have been working on your decor for weeks, then you can leave the colour for another day and go all out monochrome. The choice is yours….

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
3 sheets of A4 white card
A Printer
Scissors*
Something to colour in with- paint, crayons, felt tips etc
Hole Punch
String
Sticky Tape

WHAT TO DO
1. Using the card, print out the template. Colour in all the templates. Cut carefully around the outline of the skulls and roses.

2. Use the guidelines on the skulls and roses (located in the top corners) to punch holes through for your string. If you don’t have a hole punch, just use your scissors to pierce the holes.
3. Unravel the string to just over a metre and feed through each hole, taking care to ensure the string goes behind the templates and not in front. Space out your templates accordingly. When you are happy with the length, cut the string and make little loops at either end. Secure the loops with a little sticky tape.  Now hang and enjoy!**

*Please remember to supervise children and don’t let them run riot with the scissors!
**The material quantities above make just over a metre, so if you want your decoration longer, just print out more templates!

DIY: Calavera Skull Decoration. Today’s project is Super+Super’s offering to the #DOTDblogParty…  our version of a Calavera skull which is traditionally made as an offering during the Dia de los muertos festivities in exchange for luck, health and wealth, makes a lovely little plant decoration of if you are feeling particularly joyous a fun cake topper! More often than not these decorations are made from sugar and decorated with icing and beads and piled high at alters and in traditional Mexican shrines. Our little fella however is polystyrene and has found himself a nice succulent to rest in.

You will need:

Polystyrene skull decoration from Hobbycraft

chalk pens

crepe paper + matching embroidery floss

a skewer

glue

scissors

mini pom poms
SAMSUNG CSC1- Cut 3 little piles of 6 squares of crepe paper. Ours were approx 3″ by 2.5″ but they can be quite rough.SAMSUNG CSC

2- Cut a short length of floss and after folding your little pile of paper in a concertina tie this around the centre to make a bow like fan.SAMSUNG CSC

3- Fan out the layers to create a mini paper pom-pom!SAMSUNG CSC

4- Repeat this 3 times. We then used our scissors and cut into each layer to add more texture.SAMSUNG CSC

4- Cut 2 more pieces of crepe approx 2″ x 4″ and carefully cut into little paper fringes pieces!SAMSUNG CSC

SAMSUNG CSC

5- Push your skewer into the underside of the skull and make sure it is secure (you might want to add a spot of glue here)SAMSUNG CSC

6- Squeeze a thin line of glue along the top of your paper fringing…SAMSUNG CSC

…And wrap around your skewer approx 1″ down from the skull. Repeat this step with the next paper fringe layering it slightly higher up.SAMSUNG CSC

Pens at the ready!SAMSUNG CSC

7- This next bit is a little freestyle which as you should know by now we love!Starting by filling in the eye sockets with dark colours you can then cover your skull with a lovely random array of dots, lines and squiggles!SAMSUNG CSC

Our Pinterest board has lots of sugar skull deco inspiration so if you are stuck for a design just take a look there.SAMSUNG CSC

8- Now you are ready to stick your paper pom-poms on to the top of your skull!SAMSUNG CSC

9- We finished our design with a few additional mini pom-poms! More is definitely more for this project. We hope you have fun making yours!SAMSUNG CSC

Todays #DOTDblogParty guest post is brought to you by the supremely witty (and equally cheeky!) Leigh of intwosandthrees fame! Its a fantastic project for the weekend and I think we will be taking inspo from Leigh for some super fun photo themed xmas gifts! Intwosandthrees is mainly stocked on Etsy, with a selection featured in a variety of shops and proudly exhibited across the UK. We hope you love our Day 4 project!

Embroidered Photos: Day of the Dead Style! I love the Day of the dead style face paints and sugar skull decorations with the bright flowers and love hearts making skulls not just for Halloween. With this simple DIY you can recreate all the bright colourful fun and keep the festivities all year round. Dig out that favourite photo of you and your friends, or a fave selfie or an unused collection of found postcards – with this simple DIY you can give them a new life!

What you’ll need:

DSC_6165_edited_

  • A sharp needle (I tend to use sizes 18 – 24 as they’re a little sharper, ask at your craft shop if you’re unsure)
  • A pair of scissors
  • A pencil and piece of paper
  • Some blue tack
  • A selection of embroidery skeins or threads
  • A photo or postcard – you can print or copy a photo onto card so that you keep the original. This means you can also use your favourite photo from facebook etc too! Any smooth card is fine – you’ll be surprised how easy it is to stitch through.

Directions:

First of all, research some ideas for the sugar skull pattern you’d like to recreate. Super + Super have a great Pinterest board filled with ideas if you’re a little stuck! Sketch out a few simple ideas – bare in mind, if you’re working on a photo or postcard, you might not have loads of room but a few flowers etc will look great in bright colours

DSC_6169_edited_

Draw your ideas on to the photo or postcard – it will make the next step easier if you have some guide lines to follow

DSC_6171_edited_

Roll the blue-tack in to a thick flat ball and place behind an area of the photo where you are first going to start piercing the holes. Using the blue-tack steadies the photo and catches the needle

DSC_6172_edited_

Following your design, begin piercing holes. Try to keep an even distance between holes – remember that card can be a fragile material so try not to pierce holes too close together. Depending on your design, you may be able to use the same hole twice, so bare that in mind too. Starting on a small section first will you give you the opportunity to add more holes later

DSC_6174_edited_

Take your embroidery threads/skeins and cut about an arm’s length of thread (this will be easier to work with). Then split your thread – skeins are often about 6 – 8 threads together, you’ll only need 2 – 3 so as not to rip the holes as you begin stitching

DSC_6176_edited_

Begin stitching your design! Use as many colours as you like and have fun with it! Keep the knots on the back tight enough to hold your design but be careful of any snags – remember you’re working with a fragile material that’s fairly unforgiving. Don’t panic if you do tare any holes or rip the paper – simply tape up the back, it will soon hold everything in place and you won’t be able to tell from the front!

DSC_6178_edited_

To stitch the design I simply used back stitch – it’s a strong stitch that will link your design together nicely and keeps it simple! To create the edging I used a blanket stitch, and to create the flowers I used an old loop technique. If you’re stuck on these, Super + Super have shown some great simple DIY’s for embroidery and Pinterest has some step by step guides that are really easy to follow.

DSC_6180_edited_

DSC_6182_edited_

Have fun with this little project and go for it – see what else you can add! You could crochet a boarder from the blanket stitched edge, add some thread to hang the photo once it’s finished, or even add sequins and beads.

I’ve stuck with a very simple design, but with bright coloured threads to add a new texture to the photos. The vintage postcards were a find from a charity shop, this little DIY is a great way to use up the collection!

I can’t wait to see your versions! Remember to tag me in your photos on Instagram (@intwosandthrees) and feel free to ask me any questions while making these!
